COURSE INFORMATION

When making jewellery please note that you will require good use of your hands and eyesight. A sustained level of concentration is required as is following instruction/direction.

Rachel has had formal teacher training and experience teaching goldsmithing to a variety of learning styles and skills sets.  The more information you provide can help make your learning journey smooth. If you feel you have any impairments or learning challenges that might affect you or the course work please contact us prior to booking and we will do our best to find a class suitable and/or make special arrangements where possible.

Your level will be determined based on your actual bench skills meaning that we will assess your work and advance you when you are ready to move up a level. Typically it takes 2-4 terms to progress to the next level. For advanced students they may choose to take the course as long as they wish. Special technique workshops are also a wonderful way to top up knowledge or try something more challenging.

Please note most jewellery making skills are not acquired in less than 4-5 years full time so please be realistic with your expectations. Anyone promising you otherwise is definitely not be realistic either. This is a journey that never ends. Most experienced goldsmiths would argue it takes more than a dozen years and a good teacher/master along side too.  There is a lot to learn and time spent practicing outside of class will help your progression.

All tools are provided by Rachel Hearne Jewellery School though you may wish to build your own hand tool kit so you can continue some tasks at home.  Your own kit should be well marked and labelled as mix ups can easily happen.

You will be advised on where to purchase materials such as silver, copper or brass or it may be possible to purchase some metals from Rachel Hearne Ltd at a fair price. We will be encouraging you to become comfortable with ordering your own supplies so you are able to be self-sufficient.
