Grandmother's Opal and Diamonds

This precious heirloom ring belong to Jo’s Grandmother and she wanted to be able to wear it more often as it was not her style and a bit old fashioned. The main opal is in wonderful condition and was very carefully removed from its 9ct yellow gold mount along with the diamonds and tiny opal accents either side. She decided on a more modern look with a full bezel set arrangement in platinum with all stones being flush and free of any claws.

After the initial consultation the diamonds were clean and inspected, 9ct gold scrapped for a bit of credit and the fabrication in platinum started you can see the melt in crucible below. There are some in progress shots before and after hallmarking along with setting diamonds and opal. Jo was VERY patient this gorgeous ring took me longer than I planned mainly because I lost my nerve for setting the opal due the high stakes of breaking. I managed it with a no shaking and no breaking - viola! A gorgeous result revamped and ready for many more years of wear and sparkle.

2 diamonds set - 2 more to go.

Opal is in - phew!
