Participating MJN jeweller Rachel Hearne says: “For this exhibit I wanted to develop and explore a unique yet flexible accessory that may be worn by anyone celebrating the union of marriage. To me, the wedding hat is the ultimate symbol of celebration and decadence, worn not just by members of the bridal party but by many of those who are celebrating the love between the honoured couple.
The series of pins I have created are flexible in wear and can be worn as an accessory to enhance and secure a hat or hairstyle but can also be used to accentuate a handbag, shawl, or jacket.”
Rachel Hearne Contemporary Jewellery is one of 6 selected Made in Lancashire businesses to take part in an exciting display of upcoming North West designer makers.

Design Initiative have selected Rachel Hearne Contemporary Jewellery to take part in an exciting new Regional Initiatives in Creative Industries (RICI)project where communication design practitioners from the North West of England are invited to develop or implement a new way of working that will help their business innovate and grow. “RICI” has been created to help bridge the gap between the desire for smarter working and the reality by finding more efficient ways of working.
Adrian Wise, of Salford University, will be working closely with the owner, Rachel Hearne, to develop a bespoke jig to allow for safe and efficient slicing of eco friendly material called Tagua nut otherwise known as vegetable ivory.
Rachel says: “Using this material is a pleasure, it is soft to carve yet rigid and can be coloured beautifully with natural or commercial dyes. This jig will allow faster slicing of the material bringing the cost of production down, making Tagua more affordable for use in my designs.”
The project is being funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and Creative Lancashire and supported by CIDS and will benefit businesses in Lancashire, Cumbria and Cheshire.
